The Sandford Hill P.E. Curriculum

We are very proud of our sporting provision at Sandford Hill and have recently been awarded the Sainsbury’s School Games Gold Award.  Children in our Early Years have a mix of physical development through timetabled lessons and through extra-curricular provision.

All pupils in KS1 and KS2 have two hours of P.E. timetabled each week to cover the main areas of the curriculum. This is achieved through indoor and outdoor P.E. lessons, as well as swimming for Y2 and KS2 – carried out by qualified swimming instructors at Fenton Manor.

During P.E. sessions all children are encouraged to: become skillful and intelligent performers, repeat and refine motor skills, set targets and exercise vigorously in each activity that they do. From these targets, children have the necessary skills and enthusiasm to participate in a wider range of sporting activities, thus enabling them to live more active lifestyles. Furthermore, from regular class discussions about lifestyle choices, children have the knowledge and understanding of how to eat healthily and make healthier choices.

A huge range of extra-curricular P.E. and sporting opportunities are on offer to pupils of all ages and abilities – provided by members of staff and also by outside coaches/agencies. Children also have further opportunities to participate in numerous inter-school tournaments, leagues and competitions. Intra-school sport is also catered for at break times, lunchtimes, and Sports days, with events being organised to ensure that children are engaged and active.
