Reading In Year 2

We believe that reading skills are very important to the success of our children in school and in their future working lives. We aim to ensure that reading is a fun, purposeful and imaginative activity for our children, which opens doors to all kinds of new worlds for them.

Within Year 2, our children read a wide range of texts from 'The Oxford Reading Tree Scheme'.  We also look at a wide range of other books too both individually and as part of a group or whole class. Some of our class texts include:

  • Miranda The Explorer by James Mayhew
  • The Owl And The Pussycat by Edward Lear and aslo Julia Donaldson's version
  • Mr Wolf's Pancakes by Jan Fearnley
  • Into The Forest / The Tunnel  by Anthony Browne
  • Charlie And The Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl

All the children have an independent reading book which they take home and our children also take part in our ‘Reading Race’ which encourages them to read at home at least four times a week. The percentage of the children who read four times a week is displayed in the hall and weekly percentages are shared with parents on the school newsletter.

The children in Year 2 will  share / discuss a book with an adult at least three times a week and have regular opportunity throughout the week to further develop their reading skills, though studying whole class texts and through thier work within guided groups. We also regularly read as part of our learning in other subject areas as we strive to instill a lifelong love of books. This year, we also celebrated World Book Day when the children came to school dressed as a favoured book character.
